Aqua regia is also used for etching and several analytical techniques. In certain laboratories, it's also used to clean glassware of organic chemicals and metal particles. Because no residues of paramagnetic chromium may remain to ruin spectra, this procedure is recommended over the more usual chromic acid bath for cleaning NMR tubes. While chromic acid baths are not recommended because of the high toxicity of chromium and the risk of explosions, aqua regia is also extremely corrosive and has been linked to multiple explosions due to improper handling.Aqua regia quickly loses its efficacy (although remaining a powerful acid) due to the interaction between its components that causes it to decompose.
